Barbaroco

Forget the austerity of traditional classical concerts and the invisible wall between artists and audience — Barbaroco is the complete opposite. The ensemble creates a strong connection and a unique sense of closeness, turning each performance into a vibrant moment of shared experience.

Founded by viol player Eliaz Hercelin, Barbaroco draws its energy from his eclectic musical background — from folk to jazz, rock to classical, before arriving at baroque music. This richness enables the ensemble to present emotionally powerful programmes and striking interpretations of early music that resonate deeply with contemporary sensibilities.

Surrounded by musicians driven by the same creative impulse, Barbaroco generates a contagious synergy. Their complete immersion in the music carries the audience through moving journeys across time, where art becomes an immersive and unforgettable experience.

ELIAZ HERCELIN SANZ

Born in Nantes in 1992 and raised in Spain, Eliaz is a multifaceted musician passionate about artistic exploration and the intersection of musical worlds. His eclectic training—ranging from folk music to jazz, rock, classical, and baroque repertoire—influences his unique approach to early music interpretation.

He began music as a child with tambourine and accordion at the folklore school in Guadalajara (Spain), before moving on to electric bass and then jazz double bass in his teens. With the group Quartetto Minimo, he honed his skills in improvisation and composition, receiving several national awards.

His musical journey eventually led him to classical repertoire. He studied double bass at the conservatories of Guadalajara and Toulouse, where he discovered his true calling: the viola da gamba and early music.

Eliaz earned a degree in Music and Heritage Interpretation in Versailles, during which time he founded the ensemble Barbaroco. He later pursued a Master’s in Early Music Interpretation at the Sorbonne and CRR de Paris, focusing his research on improvisation practices of the Spanish Renaissance.

Under his direction, Barbaroco quickly found its place on major early music stages, performing at festivals such as Embaroquement Immédiat, Les Riches Heures de la Réole, the Festival de Saintes, Festival d’Ambronay, and La Cité de la Voix.
Barbaroco is now recognised for its original and immersive performances, where the boundary between artist and audience fades, giving way to moments of pure connection and shared emotion.
